I ENJOYED what I saw of the European Cup Final (disrupted somewhat by having to run Number Two Grandson to his d-jaying gig). Both sides played some great stuff, in particular, one or two of Messi's passes, plus the movement of his two Amigos up front.
I recall seeing the teenaged Paul Pogba playing for a young Manchester United team, against Ayr United. He did one or two things that night which indicated the outstanding player he would become. He is a rare talent.
After last night, I can only conclude that anonymous Scottish fitba person (some say he was a journalist, others, an SFA "blazer") who, after the Real Madrid v Eintracht match at Hampden commented: "The Scottish fans wouldn't want to watch that every week (or something)".
After Saturday night in Berlin, I can only say: "Aye we wid, you bet we wid".
SUNDAY found me inside Rugby Park, to witness the first national cup final to be played on an artificial surface, as Auchinleck Talbot posted their 11th Scottish Junior Cup victory, against brave Musselburgh Athletic.
The game was a cracking advert for the Juniors, the two goals from open play - Dwayne Hyslop's thundering 25-yard volley for Talbot's opener and Jordyn Sheerin's turn and shot into the postage stamp for Athletic's equaliser, would have graced any game.
The penalty from which Gordon Pope clinched victory for the Bot was soft, but, for all that, it was a stone-waller, despatched with precision and aplomb by Pope.
Outsiders Athletic played arguably the better football, but, Talbot forced them to play it in front of their defence and in the second half when the
Ayrshire side almost invited Musselburgh to play through them, it proved impossible.
Sheerin certainly knows the way to goal, but, in the second half he was all-too-often, seen wide on the right and he was never going to hurt the Bot there.
So, Tommy Sloan has now equalled Willie Knox's record of managing Talbot to five cup wins - who is to say he will not be back next season in search of number six?
Finally, a word (assuming they can read) for the three half-witted Athletic fans who were huckled-out after throwing flares. When Cumnock and Talbot fans alike can brand you as "idiots" and "hooligans" for your actions - you really don't have too-far to fall to hit rock bottom.
How about finding another outlet for your energy, Junior football doesn't need your sort.
HOW sad to learn of the all-too-early passing of Colin "Bomber" Jackson, the former Rangers and Scotland centre-half, who lost his brave battle against leukemia at the weekend.
Jackson is somewhat under-rated in the pantheon of great Rangers number fives: Meiklejohn, Simpson, Woodburn, Young, McKinnon, Butcher, Gough and so-forth.
But, he had the caps and the medals to demonstrate his qualities and you did not play over 500 games for Rangers in those days if you didn't have something.
He helped co-found the Rangers Former Players Benevolent Association, to assist those Blues Brothers who didn't have his business acumen and had fallen on hard times. He had humanity as well as as a lot of footballing ability.
Rest in Peace big man.
