20 Facts about England v Scotland games at Wembley


  1. Billy Cowan of Newcastle United was the first Scot to score at Wembley, he got the Scotland goal in the 1-1 draw in 1924 – the first Wembley international. However, today, his “goal” would have been credited as an own goal to England goalkeeper Eddie Taylor, since Cowan's shot came back off a post, hit Taylor on the back and rebounded into the net.

  1. Tommy Walker of Hearts was the first Scot to score in successive Wembley appearances. He scored Scotland's equaliser from the penalty spot – the first penalty to be awarded in the fixture in 1936. Walker then scored the only goal of the 1938 game.

  1. Alex Jackson of Huddersfield Town is the only Scot to have netted a hat-trick in a Wembley international, scoring three of the five goals which the “Wembley Wizards” scored in the 1928 game.

  1. Alex James scored the other two Scottish goals, three other Scots – Jimmy Fleming of Rangers in 1930, Lawrie Reilly of Hibs in 1953 and Jim Baxter of Rangers in 1963 have also scored twice against England in a single Wembley match.

  1. Reilly, with Wembley goals in 1949, 1951, 1953 and 1955 is the only Scot to have scored in four successive Wembley appearances. Walker and Denis Law – 1965 and 1967 – are the only other Scots to have scored in successive England v Scotland games at Wembley.

  1. Billy Cowan (see above), Andy McLaren (Preston North End in 1947), Bobby Johnstone of Hibs in 1951, Pat Quinn of Motherwell in 1961 and Jim McCalliog of Sheffield Wednesday, in 1967 all made their Scotland debut at Wembley, and marked the occasion by scoring. Cowan never played for Scotland again.

  1. Lawrie Reilly's five goals – one each in 1949, 1951 and 1955 and his brace in 1953 is the most scored by a Scot in the fixture at Wembley.

  1. Graeme Souness, in 1986, is the only Scotland captain to have scored at Wembley.

  1. Bobby Lennox, in 1967, and Kenny Dalglish in 1977 are the only Celtic players to have scored for Scotland at Wembley.

  1. Rangers, with four players – Jimmy Fleming in 1930, Davie Wilson in 1961, Jim Baxter in 1963 and Colin Stein in 1969 has provided more Scottish goal-scorers at Wembley than any other club.

  1. Preston North End, with Alex James in 1928, Andy McLaren in 1947 and Tommy Docherty in 1955, are second in this clubs list.

  1. Willie Wallace of Celtic was the first Scottish substitute at Wembley, when he replaced Alan Gilzean in the second half of the 1969 game.

  1. Jimmy McMullan (Manchester City, 1928), George Brown (Rangers, 1938), George Young Rangers, 1949 and 1951), Eric Caldow (Rangers, 1963), John Greig (Rangers, 1967), Bruce Rioch (Everton, 1977), Danny McGrain (Celtic, 1981) and Colin Hendry (Rangers, 1999) are the only victorious Scottish captains at Wembley.

  1. Dave Cumming (Middlesbrough, 1938), Alan Rough (Partick Thistle, 1981) and Neil Sullivan (Wimbledon, 1999) are the only Scottish goalkeepers to have kept a clean sheet at Wembley.

  1. Tommy Ring of Clyde scored the fastest Scotland goal at Wembley, one minute into the 1957 match.

  1. 238 players have represented Scotland in the 30 previous Wembley encounters, 176 of them made a single appearance in the fixture.

  1. 38 of these players made their international debut for Scotland at Wembley. For seven of these players, it would be their only appearance in the national side.

  1. Joe Jordan was the last Scottish player to make his Scotland debut at Wembley, when he came on for Lou Macari in the 74th minute of the 1973 game. Joe is the only Scot to make his debut off the bench in the fixture.


  2. George Young, Lawrie Reilly, Denis Law, Billy Bremner and Kenny Dalglish, each made five appearances in the Wembley fixture, the most by a Scotsman.


  3. Steven Naismith, an 86th minute replacement for Shaun Maloney in the last Wembley encounter, in 2013, has had the least exposure to the special Wembley atmosphere in this fixture.
